VCBS 6th Annual Spring Meeting - May 7,
2005
William Caswell Will Present "Covered Spans of Yesteryear."
Open to All Friends of Covered Bridges
The Sixth Annual All-member Meeting of the Vermont Covered Bridge Society will be held
Saturday,
May 7, at the Lyndon Corner Grange Hall on York Street, Lyndonville, Vermont.
The featured event of the meeting is a presentation
about
historical covered bridges of the past given by William Caswell, Jr.
William Caswell, Jr. is part of the group, "Covered
Spans of
Yesteryear," which is researching long gone covered bridges, recording their history, and
collecting their
photographs. The "Group" is comprised of four people:
Trish Kane initiated the Covered Spans of Yesteryear Project in her Spanning New York
State column in the NSPCB Newsletter in the spring of 2003, asking her readers for their
assistance. Bill Caswell, Bill Cockrell and Dick Roy responded. Trish works at Colgate University
as an Administrative Assistant to the Director of the Annual Fund. She is a covered bridge
researcher, enthusiast and advocate for their preservation since 1981. She and her husband Bob
live in
Sherburne, NY.
Bill Caswell works for the Dept. of Transportation in NH as a CAD/D Section Supervisor and
lives in Concord, NH. He designed and maintains an excellent website for Covered Spans of
Yesteryear: www.lostbridges.org , and, says
Trish Kane, is most definitely the "brains" behind the website.
Bill Cockrell is Newsletter Editor of the Bridge-Tender and past President of the Oregon
Covered Bridge Society. Bill has been very involved with Covered Bridge Preservation and
research on Oregon's Covered Bridges for nearly 30 years (since 1975). He is also the co-author
of Roofs over Rivers - A Guide to Oregon's Covered Bridges. He and his lovely wife, Linda, live
in Salem, Oregon.
Dick Roy was editor of the Connecticut River Covered Bridge Society Bulletin from 1977
until 1989 when the organization dissolved, then the editor of the National Society newsletter
from 1992 to 2002. Dick is a mentor to new and upcoming covered bridge enthusiasts and always
willing to assist in any way he can. He is a historian on covered bridges and has a tremendous
collection of covered bridge postcards that he has shared with the project. He and his charming
wife June reside in Manchester, NH.
The doors and refreshment table will be open at
9:30 a.m.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. with reports of the society's activities. The presentation will
begin at
11:30.
The meeting will break for dinner at 12:30 and a
drawing for
raffle prizes will be held, the receipts to go to the VCBS Jim Fearon Save-a-bridge Fund.
The dinner will be Vermont style Chicken and biscuit
with
vegetable coffee and dessert, served by the ladies of the Grange for $8.00 per plate. If attendees
wish to
participate in the dinner, they must make reservations by April 30 by sending a check to VCBS,
PO Box
795, Lyndonville, VT 05851.
After dinner the meeting will adjourn to allow
participants to
tour the area's covered bridges.
The Vermont Covered Bridge Society is a non-profit
organization, founded in the year 2000, dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Vermont's
covered
bridges. Our membership comes from all walks, scattered throughout the US and Canada.
